Rather than partnering with a rescue, the lounge is run by the shelter itself, so almost every cat and kitten visitors meet is available for adoption. Admission covers an hour in the lounge and a self-serve coffee, tea or juice. Reservations are recommended because weekend sessions fill quickly, and up to about 15 people share a session. Guests sign a waiver and sanitize their hands on arrival, children under 7 must be closely supervised by a parent, and cats may only be given treats handed out by volunteers. Visitors who are not looking to adopt are welcome. The shelter also runs fostering, medical care and trap-neuter-return programs for cats across metro Detroit, and adoptions can be started at the lounge.

Lansing, Michigan

Constellation ⁠‌‌​​‌​‌​‌​​​‌‌​‌​​‌​​​‌​‌​‌​‌​‌​‌​‌‌​​​‌⁠Cat Cafe is a nonprofit cat cafe and full-service coffee shop in a purple house on North Cedar Street in Lansing's Old Town. The cat room holds up to 30 adoptable rescue cats, and the cafe houses cats for partner rescues and processes their adoptions on site. The coffee bar serves espresso drinks, milkshakes, matcha, mocktails and seasonal specials, and guests can stay on the cafe side without visiting the cats. Visits to the cat room are paid per person and booked online or by phone; walk-ins are accepted when space allows, as the room holds 12 people at a time. Every visitor signs a waiver, children under 16 need an adult and children under 12 may not pick up cats. Grand Rapids, Michigan

Happy ⁠‌‌​​‌​‌​​​‌​‌​​‌​‌​​​​​‌​‌‌​‌‌‌​​‌‌‌‌​‌​⁠Cat Cafe is a coffee shop and cat lounge on Division Avenue South in downtown Grand Rapids, opened in 2017 as the city's first cat cafe. The lounge usually has 10 to 15 adoptable cats from the partner rescue Fig and Friends, and more than a thousand cats have been adopted from it. The cafe side is open to anyone without a reservation and serves espresso drinks, cat-themed lattes and mocktails. Lounge visits are sold as 30-minute or one-hour sessions, cheaper Monday to Thursday than at weekends; reservations are recommended for weekends and walk-ins are taken when there is room. On weekdays, buying a drink includes a free 15-minute walk-in visit. Children under 13 need an adult in the lounge. Mount Pleasant, Michigan

Karma ⁠‌‌​​‌​‌​​‌​‌​‌‌​​​​​​‌​‌​‌​‌‌​‌​‌‌​‌‌​​​⁠Kat Cafe is a cat lounge on East Broadway Street in Mount Pleasant near Central Michigan University. Founded in 2018, it is a state-licensed animal shelter run by the nonprofit Karma Kat Rescue, and its cats live together cage-free in a communal lounge while they wait for homes; more than 1,000 have been adopted. Visitors pay a small admission and can stay as long as they like. Reservations are strongly recommended because the cafe limits the number of people per cat, and walk-ins are not always possible. Kzoo ⁠‌‌​​‌​‌​‌‌​​​‌‌​​​​‌​​‌‌‌‌‌‌​​‌​‌‌‌​​‌‌‌⁠Cat Cafe and Rescue is a cage-free cat cafe on South Westnedge Avenue in Kalamazoo, now on the south side, away from its original West Michigan Avenue home near Western Michigan University. It opened in July 2017 after a Kickstarter campaign and became its own nonprofit rescue in 2018; more than 900 cats were adopted in its first five years. Admission covers time with the cats plus complimentary coffee, tea, soda, water and small snacks, with a lower rate for students and under-18s. Booking online is recommended, and walk-ins are taken every day as space allows. Everyone needs a waiver on file, signed by a parent or guardian for minors. Cats may not be picked up and guests are asked to remove their shoes. All cats are spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated before adoption. It is run by the Humane Society of Huron Valley, and the cats living in the lounge are adoptable through the humane society, which shows them here in a home-like setting rather than in kennels. Visitors pay an hourly or half-hourly admission, can book online or walk in while there is room, and may bring their own food and non-alcoholic drinks. There is free Wi-Fi, café seating and a shop of cat-themed gifts. Capacity depends on how many cats are in that day. One adult is needed for every three children under 8, toddlers visit in 30-minute slots, and teens 15 and older can come alone. Orion Township, Michigan

Black ⁠‌‌​​‌​‌​‌​​‌‌‌‌​‌​​​​‌‌‌​‌​‌​‌‌‌​‌‌​​‌​​⁠Cat Beanery is a cat café inside the Orion Marketplace shopping center on South Lapeer Road in Orion Township, about eight minutes from I-75 exit 81 in northern Oakland County. Opened in October 2023, it works with its own nonprofit, Black Cat Society, which runs the shelter and keeps no more than 15 cats at a time; more than 230 have been adopted. Each visit includes at least an hour in the Cat Room, a hot drink made with house-roasted coffee or a cold drink, and a snack from the snack basket. Visitors are capped at 15 per hour so there is never more than one person per cat. Children and seniors pay less, families get a discount, and Tuesdays are discounted for everyone. Visitors buy a ticket, with a lower price for children, to spend time in the separate cat room, and walk-ins are welcome when space allows. The cafe serves coffee, tea, boba and treats such as cake, cheesecake and danish, and the gift shop sells work by local makers, from candles and maple syrup to crochet animals and cat supplies. The cafe also offers memberships, classes, support groups, crafts and game nights. Every visit helps fund the rescue's care of the cats.

Farmington Hills, Michigan

Avocato ⁠‌‌​​‌​‌​‌‌​​‌​​‌​‌‌​‌​‌​​​​​​‌​​‌‌​‌​​​‌⁠Catfé & Adoption Center is a volunteer-run cat café on Grand River Avenue in Farmington Hills, in Oakland County northwest of Detroit. It is operated by Pet Adoption Alternative of Warren (PAAW), a nonprofit rescue with no paid staff, and all proceeds go to the animals in its care. Visitors book hourly sessions in a compact lounge designed around tiny-living ideas, where adoptable cats roam freely, and a separate kitten nursery holds kittens under six months old. A self-serve coffee and tea bar and packaged snacks, including vegan options, are available. Adults and children pay different hourly rates, a second hour on the same day is discounted, and payment is electronic only. West Branch, Michigan

Christie's ⁠‌‌​​‌​‌​‌​‌‌​‌​‌​​‌​​‌​‌‌‌‌‌​‌‌‌‌‌​​‌‌​​⁠Cat Cafe, also known as Christie's Kitty Cafe, is a volunteer-run cat lounge at the home of Claws and Paws Rescue on South Valley Street in West Branch, down the road from Irons Park. The rescue bought the building in 2023 and named the cafe after co-founder Mary Koliba's daughter, Christie Johnson, who loved rescuing cats and a good cup of coffee. The lounge serves as a foster home for up to seven cats and kittens waiting for adoption through Claws and Paws, a nonprofit no-kill rescue that has rehomed more than 1,200 dogs and cats since 2012. Coffee is offered at a donation-based counter, and visitors may bring their own food and drinks, a laptop or a book and settle in with the cats. Adoption applications are handled by the rescue.

Muskegon, Michigan

The ⁠‌‌​​‌​‌​​​‌‌​​‌​‌​‌‌‌‌‌‌‌​‌‌‌‌‌​‌‌‌‌​‌‌​⁠Whisker Room is a coffee shop and cat room on Second Street in downtown Muskegon, in the former Drip Drop Drink space, and the city's first cat cafe. Opened in summer 2025 as an extension of The Arc of the Lakeshore, a nonprofit supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, it provides job training and work experience for staff of all abilities. The cat room has a small rotating group of about five adoptable cats from Big Lake Humane Society, and visitors can apply to adopt them through the shelter. Cat time is sold in short sessions at low prices, booked online or taken as a walk-in when a spot is free, and the cafe serves inexpensive coffee drinks, juice and snacks. The space is designed to be calm and sensory friendly.

Holland, Michigan

Holland ⁠‌‌​​‌​‌​​​​‌‌​‌​​​‌‌‌​‌‌​‌‌‌​‌​​​‌​​‌​​​⁠Cat Cove is a cat lounge on East Lakewood Boulevard in Holland Township, opened in July 2025. The female-owned small business works with Harbor Humane Society, which provides the adoptable cats and kittens that live cage-free in a cat room and a separate kitten room. It is not a full cafe, but sells a curated selection of Michigan-made snacks and drinks and retail items from local vendors and artists. Visits are booked online as 50-minute sessions, and walk-ins can have a shorter 30-minute visit when there is capacity. The main entrance is at the back of the building, where there is parking. Guests wear clean shoes or socks and sanitize their hands, the kitten room takes four people at a time, and children 12 and under need one adult for every two children. Daily quiet hours from 1 to 3 pm are closed to children under 12.
