Dog Run & Cafe Ann no Jikan
Higashihiroshima
Ann no Jikan is a dog run and cafe in Goso, on the edge of Saijo in Higashihiroshima, run by Ann no Ie, a private shelter that has rescued dogs and cats for around a decade and houses dozens of animals waiting for adoption. The cafe opens on the second and fourth Sunday of each month, from around midday into the afternoon. On those days visitors can have lunch, which must be reserved in advance, or cake and drinks, and spend time with the rescued cats in the cat room upstairs, while rescued dogs are outside. Many of the cats are up for adoption, so the line-up changes as they find homes, and the cafe doubles as a place to meet animals before adopting. Dog owners can use the dog run at weekends and on holidays, and members can use it at any time.

Around six cats live there, all rescued as kittens and very used to people; they readily sit on laps and play with toys. Entry to the upstairs cat room is charged as a 30-minute or 60-minute course, and drinks are available. Nomikui Dabo
Fukuyama, Hiroshima
Nomikui Dabo is an izakaya in Kasuga-cho, eastern Fukuyama, near Higashi-Fukuyama Station, that bills itself as a restaurant with cats. Several rescued cats live in the restaurant and greet guests at the door, and many visitors come mainly to see them while they eat and drink. The menu is broad, from sashimi and other Japanese dishes to pizza, with all-you-can-drink plans and ordering by smartphone. Seating is in private rooms, around a sunken kotatsu-style table and at the counter, and dogs are allowed in the private rooms. The izakaya also lends its space to a local rescue group for cat adoption events. It opens every evening and stays open until late at night, and booking ahead is recommended because seating is limited to the private rooms.
Check each cafe's website for current hours, booking requirements and age restrictions before visiting.
