Tail Town Cats
Pasadena, California
Tail Town Cats is a nonprofit cat lounge and adoption space on East Washington Boulevard in Pasadena's East Washington Village, next door to Sarkis Pastry. Founded by Carol Warren in 2021, it works with Kitten Rescue Los Angeles and keeps 30 to 40 adoptable cats in its lounge, many of them under two years old. Visitors book a one-hour pass, open to ages 6 and up, with one adult required for every two children under 12; the last entry is an hour before closing. A monthly membership allows repeat visits. There is no cafe on site, but drinks and pastries from next door can be brought in. Kitten Rescue also holds lobby adoption hours on weekend afternoons, and more than 500 cats have been adopted since opening. Evening events include watercolor and art classes, journaling, movement classes, cat art shows, bingo and beginner mahjong nights.

Tabby Tea Cat Lounge
Davis, California
Tabby Tea Cat Lounge is a small cat adoption lounge inside Cat Tales Feline Health Center, a cat-only veterinary clinic on West Covell Boulevard in north Davis. Opened in December 2024 as the city's first cat lounge, it hosts a few adoptable cats and kittens at a time from the Yolo County shelter, which visitors meet in a quiet, fear-free room. Visits are booked by the hour online, with a per-person fee that goes to local shelters and animal welfare groups, and include a complimentary hot or cold drink and Wi-Fi. Children aged 8 and up are welcome with an adult. House rules ask guests not to pick up the cats or wake sleeping ones, to play with wand toys rather than hands, and to keep drinks in lidded cups. Cats in the lounge can be adopted through the clinic together with the Yolo County shelter.

Ella's Cathouse & Adoption Center
Napa, California
Ella's Cathouse & Adoption Center is a cage-free, no-kill cat adoption center run by the Napa nonprofit Jameson Humane in the Food City shopping center on Old Sonoma Road in south Napa. Formerly Ella's Cathouse & Catnip Bar, it reopened at this location in 2025. Walk-in visitors are welcome during the Friday to Sunday afternoon opening hours to spend time with adoptable cats and kittens of all ages in an open, cage-free space, and some sanctuary cats also live on site. Groups who want the cats to themselves can arrange a private visit by email, limited to four guests with up to two children accompanied by an adult. Adoption involves an application, a home check and an adoption fee. The center is named after the late cat of a Jameson Humane board member and has helped about 100 cats find homes since reopening.

The Dancing Cat
San Jose, California
The Dancing Cat is a nonprofit cat adoption lounge at 702 East Julian Street, near downtown San Jose, founded by Ann Chasson and Mary Rubin and run as Karma Cat Rescue. It began as a four-week pop-up in May 2015, reopened in May 2016 with Silicon Valley Pet Project and has operated as an independent rescue since September 2018. Its cats are mostly adults at risk at the San Jose Animal Care Center, and seven to eleven of them normally live cage-free in a living-room-style lounge with a quiet back room. Visits are booked by the hour for a small admission fee, children must be 5 or older and with an adult, and guests may bring their own coffee or snacks. Adoption fees range from $80 to $155, and adopted cats are delivered to their new homes. An SUV crashed into the entrance on September 2, 2025; no cats were hurt, but the lounge has been closed for repairs since then and its cats are in foster homes, still available for adoption.

Mini Cat Town San Jose

Mini Cat Town San Jose is a kitten lounge and adoption floor inside Eastridge Shopping Center in East San Jose. It was the first adoption floor of Mini Cat Town, a nonprofit founded in 2015 by sisters Thi, Thoa and Tram Bui that specializes in rescuing neonatal kittens from local shelters; the kittens are raised in foster homes and move to the adoption floor once they are about eight weeks old, two pounds and spayed or neutered. The Cat Lounge Rescue and Adoption Center
La Jolla, California
The Cat Lounge Rescue and Adoption Center is a nonprofit cat lounge on Torrey Pines Road in La Jolla, a few minutes from La Jolla Village and La Jolla Cove. Opened in November 2019, it rescues cats from high-kill shelters across Southern California and works with other rescues and gives each cat full medical care. The cats roam freely in a living-room style lounge with a separate kitten nursery, and street-facing windows let passers-by watch them. Visitors walk in without an appointment and pay a per-person admission that allows them to stay as long as they like during opening hours, with no age limit, although children under 14 need a parent or guardian. Admission paid on the day can be credited toward a same-day adoption. The lounge can also be booked for private parties, and it runs a low-cost vaccine clinic and a free supply program for community cat feeders.

Champy's Catfé
Lincoln, California
Champy's Catfé is a cat adoption lounge inside FieldHaven Marketplace, the thrift and vintage store run by the nonprofit FieldHaven Feline Center on F Street in downtown Lincoln, Placer County. Visitors walk in during store hours and sit with adoptable FieldHaven cats in a relaxed, home-like room, help themselves to coffee or tea for a donation, and are welcome to stay and read, study or work on a laptop with free Wi-Fi. No booking is needed. Any of the cats can be adopted on site, with staff on hand to help match people with a cat. The room is named after Champy, FieldHaven's blind spokescat, who was rescued from a hoarding case in Lincoln in 2014 and now lives in retirement at the founder's home. All proceeds from the store support FieldHaven's rescue work, and the catfé can be booked for private events.

Itty Bitty Kitty Cafe
San Jose, California
Itty Bitty Kitty Cafe is the kitten lounge of Itty Bitty Orphan Kitty Rescue (IBOK), a volunteer-run nonprofit that saves orphaned kittens from high-kill shelters and raises them in foster homes. It sits at the back of Cambrian Park Plaza, a retro strip mall on Union Avenue in San Jose's Cambrian area, behind Pup Plaza. The cafe opens on weekends, when foster volunteers bring in kittens for a chance at adoption. Visits last 50 minutes in one of two kitten playrooms furnished like a family living room, with a volunteer in the room and small groups only. There is a per-person fee, guests must be at least five years old, and reservations are recommended, though walk-ins are taken when there is space. Shoes come off at the door, so visitors should bring socks. Coffee and cookies are set out nearby, and all the kittens are adoptable through IBOK.

Cat Chillin' Zone
Martinez, California
Cat Chillin' Zone is a cat lounge and senior cat rescue on Center Avenue in downtown Martinez, describing itself as the first cat lounge in Contra Costa County. The woman-owned nonprofit takes in healthy older cats at risk of euthanasia in Bay Area shelters, along with cats that would otherwise need hospice care, and lets them live cage-free in a storefront adoption lounge. Visitors pay by the hour, with lower rates for seniors, military and children, and admission goes toward the rescue's adoption costs. Drop-ins are welcome, though scheduling a visit is preferred, and groups of more than six should call ahead. Children under 18 need a parent or guardian, and infants and toddlers are not admitted. Toys and teasers are provided. Adoption follows an application and a meet-and-greet with the chosen cat. The lounge also hosts trivia, karaoke and bunco nights.
