Kokura Nekocyaya
Kitakyushu, Fukuoka2.5 mi / 4.0 km
Kokura Nekocyaya is one of Kitakyushu's oldest cat cafes, on the fifth floor of the Bazaari Kokura building in Uomachi, Kokurakita Ward, a minute from Heiwadori Monorail Station and about ten minutes on foot from JR Kokura Station. It opened around the start of 2011, and many of its resident cats are elderly cats once taken to the city's animal centre; the cafe does not take in cats itself. Since 2012 it has hand-raised kittens for the Kitakyushu Animal Welfare Center, and it fosters cats for the volunteer group Sakineko, so around twenty of the cats are looking for homes, after an interview and a trial of about a month. Visits start at ¥700 for 30 minutes with a drink, ¥1,200 for an hour, up to ¥2,000 for two hours, and sets add paw-shaped cakes or cat-face brulee. Cats may not be picked up, flash is not allowed and hands are washed on entry. Children of junior high school age and under are in principle not admitted, though a first 30-minute visit is allowed if they stay calm and quiet. It is open 11 AM to 9 PM and closed on Mondays except public holidays.

Its owner has rescued hundreds of cats over about 15 years, and the cafe now houses around 60 rescued cats, many of them disabled. Visitors can meet the cats in the cafe before discussing adoption with staff; the adoption fee is ¥10,000 for a kitten not yet neutered, ¥25,000 for a male and ¥28,000 for a female, covering vaccinations, testing, flea treatment and neutering. Entry costs ¥900 for 30 minutes, ¥1,300 for an hour, ¥1,700 for 90 minutes or ¥2,100 for two hours, and drinks, cat soft-serve and light meals are ordered separately at a counter behind a large acrylic wall, where cafe-only visitors and people with allergies can watch the cats. Reservations are not taken, and children under 10 cannot enter. It opens every afternoon, with evening sessions on Fridays, weekends and holidays, and closing days are irregular.
