Cafe Arles
Cafe Arles is a retro kissaten, an old-style Japanese coffee shop, that has served Shinjuku since 1978 from the ground floor of a building on a side street in Shinjuku 5-chome, about 5 minutes on foot from Shinjuku-sanchome Station. It is known for its shop cats, which wander the room or sleep on the chairs: the long-time cat Jirocho was about 16 in October 2026, when reviewers also met a new kitten, and staff say the cats are most active around 2 PM. It is not a cat cafe: there is no entry or time charge, and guests order from a menu of kissaten classics such as omurice, napolitan spaghetti, curry and cream soda, with a meal costing around ¥1,000; every order comes with a free banana and corn snack. Smoking is allowed at every seat, so under-20s cannot go in under Japanese law, and payment is cash only. Reviews in October 2026 included complaints about smoking around the cats, cleanliness and unfriendly staff. It is open from 11:30 AM to 9 PM and closed on Sundays.

4C's Bar Rosso
Shinjuku, Tokyo0.2 mi / 0.3 km
4C's Bar Rosso is a small wine and whisky bar on the G1 lane of Shinjuku Golden Gai, up a narrow staircase on the second floor, about 3 minutes on foot from exit E1 of Shinjuku-sanchome Station. It opened in 2014. Its house cats, named after black grape varieties, roam the counter, the stairs and guests' laps and often greet visitors on the way up. It is a bar rather than a cat cafe: there is no time charge, guests pay a table charge of ¥1,000 per person and order drinks, and treats for the cats can be bought. The cats come and go as they please and sometimes go out for walks, so they are not always in. The bar is entirely non-smoking because of the cats, and guests are asked not to pick up the cats or use flash. The owner keeps many wines by the glass, sake, rare whiskies and gin. It opens around 5 or 6 PM and closes around 2 AM, or 5 AM on Fridays and Saturdays, and it is closed on the first Sunday of each month.

BAR Cats in the Box is a late-night cat bar on the seventh floor of the Metro Building in Kabukicho, Shinjuku, about 4 minutes on foot from exit A1 of Higashi-Shinjuku Station. About ten cats, among them the rescued cat Gonzo, spend the evening in the small bar, walking along the counter and among its six seats while guests drink. It describes itself as a cat bar rather than a cat cafe. In October 2026 it announced that it admits subscription members only; membership is sold through its online shop, and enquiries go through its official LINE account. There is no official price list online: reviewers in 2026 reported a ¥3,000 entry fee and bills of ¥14,000 to ¥20,000 for one or two people for about an hour with drinks. It opens at 8 PM and stays open until morning. It is non-smoking and has an English menu and free Wi-Fi. It drew international attention after appearing in a CNN New Year broadcast at the end of 2023. Reviews in 2026 are mixed, with complaints about the prices, a strong smell and clutter.
