Nishiizu, Shizuoka, Japan
Yuru-yado Nekotamaru
Yuru-yado Nekotamaru is a small room-only guesthouse with resident cats in Nishina, Nishiizu, on the west coast of the Izu Peninsula, close to Norihama beach and about a minute on foot from the Sawada bus stop. Around seven indoor cats live in the house and wander the shared spaces, and they often come into the guest rooms, so guests can spend their stay with them; cats are not brought to rooms on a schedule, so encounters depend on the cats. The inn has five rooms and no meals, and bathing is by shower only, with a town-run hot spring and local restaurants nearby. Guests must be in the fourth grade of elementary school or older, and people with strong cat allergies cannot stay. Bookings are taken by phone, Instagram message or Rakuten Travel, and this is an overnight stay rather than a drop-in cafe.
