Fureai Cafe Mauruuru
Fureai Cafe Mauruuru is a small animal cafe and gallery run by Mauruuru, a Kagoshima animal-assisted therapy company, in Taniyama, about 5 to 6 minutes on foot from JR Taniyama Station. It sits in a white building beside the Nagata River, with views of the river and Sakurajima. Around 15 to 20 rescued cats live here alongside the company's therapy dogs, and many of them are very friendly and happy to sit on laps. Visits are fully booked in advance, one group at a time, so each party has the room to itself; reservations are made by Instagram message, text message or LINE, ideally by the day before. Visits are charged per hour, with a higher rate for solo visitors, and food and drink are not served. The cafe opens on Wednesdays, Thursdays, weekends and public holidays, and a small shop sells cat-shaped cookies and animal goods.

Opened in December 2020, it is attached to the Coo&RIKU pet shop, which sells animals. The room is themed as a wooden house, with timber cat walks and plenty of friendly cats, including pedigree breeds such as British Shorthairs. Rescue Cat Shelter Mirai
Kagoshima3.3 mi / 5.2 km
Rescue Cat Shelter Mirai is a rescue cat shelter in Masagocho, Kagoshima, run by the NPO Chiiki Neko Mimamoritai, a group that carries out trap-neuter-return work and supports community cats across the city. About 40 cats live in the shelter, including cats rescued from hoarding cases, and the clean, modern room opens to the public on weekend afternoons so that people can meet them. Visits are mainly for those thinking about adopting, and cats go to new homes after a trial period, with current cats introduced on Instagram. The shelter is occasionally closed on its regular days, so it is worth checking Instagram on the day before going. The group does not take in cats from the public.

Nekozuki Room Mofumofu
Kagoshima4.7 mi / 7.6 km
Nekozuki Room Mofumofu is a tiny cat room in an apartment building in Shinyashikicho, central Kagoshima, on a back street near Pers Street, a short walk from the Tenmonkan area. It describes itself as possibly the smallest cat cafe in the world, and it reopened after a renewal on 25 February 2026. Most of the resident cats are convalescing or shy, sensitive cats that are not used to people, so visits are quiet and the cats set the pace, but several others enjoy attention and play. The room shares its space with Sora 401 Kobo, the owner's small studio. Opening days and afternoon hours are announced on Instagram, usually a few days a week, so it is best to check there before visiting.

Coworking Space necohara
Ibusuki, Kagoshima22 mi / 35 km
Coworking Space necohara is a coworking space shared with rescued cats in Yunohama, Ibusuki, in the hot-spring area near the seafront. The name plays on "neko harassment", the way cats interrupt people as soon as they start working, and the cats here do exactly that, greeting visitors at the door and settling on laptops and laps. Many of them are black cats. Visits are charged per hour, with table and sofa seating, free Wi-Fi, charging points and a paid copier, and drinks in lidded containers may be brought in. It is open every day in the afternoon and evening, and booking ahead is recommended. Occasional cat yoga sessions are held. Most of the cats are waiting for new homes, and adoption is arranged by meeting, a one- or two-week trial and a formal agreement. It is run by the same people as Hachiware Farm at Tropical Farm Yamagawa.
