Cat cafés are everywhere in Chinese cities. Our directory lists 733 of them in China, more than in any country except Japan, from shopping-mall cat rooms and apartment-tower lofts to a rescue park on the Yangtze. Shanghai, Chengdu, Beijing, Guangzhou and Chongqing have the most, and nearly every provincial capital has a dozen or more.

They’re harder for visitors to find than anywhere else in Asia. Google Maps is years out of date in China, most cafés are listed only on Dianping (大众点评), Meituan, Baidu Maps or Amap, and many sit on the 20th floor of an office tower with no sign at street level. We checked the cafés below against Baidu, Dianping, Trip.com and Douyin posts at the start of November 2026, and give each one’s Chinese name so you can search for it or show it to a driver. Prices are in yuan (RMB).

How Cat Cafés Work in China

Look for 猫咖 or 撸猫馆. A cat café is a māo kā (猫咖), and many call themselves a lū māo guǎn (撸猫馆), a “cat-petting house”. Searching either word in Dianping, Meituan or Amap brings up dozens of results in any big city, with photos, opening hours and prices per head (人均).

Buy a group-buy deal before you go. Most cafés sell a ticket of 20 to 100 yuan that includes a drink and often unlimited time on weekdays. The same ticket is usually cheaper as a group-buy deal (团购) on Dianping, Meituan or Douyin, bought on your phone and scanned at the door. A few cafés, such as Chongqing’s Firefly Harbor, take bookings through a WeChat mini program. Payment is almost always by Alipay or WeChat Pay, so set one up with a foreign card before the trip.

Shoe covers and hand gel. Nearly every café hands out shoe covers or slippers and disinfects your hands at the door. Staff explain which cats like to be touched, and many cats wear a coloured collar if they’d rather be left alone.

Many cafés are catteries. A large share of Chinese cat cafés are run by breeders or pet shops and stock their rooms with pedigree Ragdolls, British Shorthairs, Maine Coons and Munchkins that are also for sale. The big chains REDOLL (荭猫) and Zhuazhua Miao Xingqiu (爪爪喵星球) sell kittens, and Zhuazhua drew complaints on a consumer platform in 2025 about kittens sold with health problems. If you’d rather support rescue work, look for the adoption cafés in each city below, such as MORE Miao Xiang Yuan and Shanghai City Cat Island, Pingxing Shijie in Beijing, Firefly Harbor in Chongqing and LOST CAT in Xi’an.

Cats, capybaras and alpacas. Many “cat cafés” are mixed animal cafés with dogs, rabbits, capybaras, alpacas or meerkats, which suits families but isn’t for everyone. Shanghai’s capybara cafés, such as Capyland on Wuyi Road, have no cats at all.

Pick an established café. Chinese media have reported several cafés that closed suddenly and left their cats behind, in Chengdu in 2021, Guangzhou in 2022 and 2023 and Chongqing’s Bishan district in 2023. Cafés with recent reviews, a long history or a rescue behind them are the safest choice.

MOCHA Tianzifang (MOCHA猫咪咖啡 田子坊店), about 110 metres from exit 1 of Dapuqiao station on Line 9, opened in September 2018 as the first Chinese branch of the Japanese chain. It spreads over four floors inside the Tianzifang lanes, and you pay by the minute with drinks included, so it’s an easy stop on a day of sightseeing. Its second branch, MOCHA Changning on Anshun Road, admits only visitors aged 12 and over.

The most central rescue café is MORE Miao Xiang Yuan (MORE喵享园) on Yuyuan Road, near Jing’an Temple. Its owner has run it since 2018, it keeps about 18 former strays, all up for adoption, and the Shanghai press reported in September 2026 that it had found homes for 134 cats.

The REDOLL chain (荭猫) began as a cattery in 2014 and has big, clean mall rooms with 40 to 50 or more pedigree cats each: Yuehui and the First Department Store on the Nanjing East Road pedestrian street, Jing’an Joy City near Qufu Road and Cloud Nine above Zhongshan Park station. In May 2026 a visit cost 88 yuan with bead crafts included. The cats are for sale, after staff check the buyer’s home and experience. Zhuazhua Miao Xingqiu (爪爪喵星球), a pet-shop chain that sells kittens, is the budget option: its branch at North Bund Raffles, reached directly from Tilanqiao station on Line 12, sold whole-day visits for 36 to 40 yuan through Douyin group-buys in 2026.

Further out, Shanghai City Cat Island (上海城市猫岛) in Shengzhai Park, Gucun, is the city’s stray-cat centre in a converted kindergarten, with around 300 neutered former strays roaming a cage-free compound. Entry to the main area is free, needs no booking and is closed on Mondays, and every cat can be adopted. It moved here from Laogang in Pudong in spring 2025, so ignore older directions. In a village courtyard in Luodian, Dagong Miao Julebu (打工喵俱乐部) is a rescue café open from 10am to 6pm that pairs well with a trip to Meilan Lake.

In the north, CATIER on Daxue Road, near exit 8 of Jiangwan Stadium station on Line 10, is a long-running café above a Wagas with many breeds; it admits no one under 12. In Nanxiang, Mao Xing She (猫星社) has more than 100 cats, some of them rescues, and a 68-yuan ticket that covers the whole day, PS5 and karaoke included.

Beijing

Beijing’s cat cafés are spread from the hutongs to the suburbs, and the best for visitors are in the old city. Browse them all on our Beijing map.

Gudao Mao Ne (鼓捣猫呢) is a two-floor courtyard house just off Nanluoguxiang, between Nanluoguxiang station on Line 6 and Shichahai on Line 8, with a tree-shaded yard, more than 30 cats and a few other animals, among them marmots. It’s small, so book ahead. Nearby, Da Ju Wei Zhong (大橘为重) is a reading-room cat café in a restored hutong near Liulichang, easy to combine with a walk through Dashilar.

Chengdu

Chengdu has around 35 cat cafés, and the most convenient cluster is in the towers around Chunxi Road and the IFS mall. Browse them all on our Chengdu map.

Also above Chunxi Road, Yuechu Maomao is on the 28th floor directly over exit B and opens until 10:30pm.

By Kuanzhai Alley, Drink A Friday on Zhazi Street, near Kuanzhai Alley station on Line 4, is a quiet Japanese-style café where a drink of about 36 yuan is all you pay. Senyu Miao Guichu (森屿喵归处) in Qingyang keeps more than a dozen cats, most of them rescued strays. In Jinjiang, down a lane from exit E of Sanguantang station, Miaou (Miaou·街道上的猫) takes only rescued strays, about 40 to 50 of them in August 2026, and adopts them out for free; a 48-yuan drink is the entry spend, and it opens in the afternoons and is closed on Mondays.

Guangzhou

Guangzhou’s cat cafés cluster in Tianhe, especially in the Liuyun neighbourhood (六运小区) near Tiyu Xilu station, which is lined with cat cafés and pet shops. Browse them all on our Guangzhou map.

Jiushi Zheyang de Miao (就是这样的喵) at 32 Tianhe South 1st Road, about three minutes from exit B of Tiyu Xilu station on Lines 1 and 3, has more than 40 cats, each with a card explaining how it likes to be handled; in May 2026 a visit with a drink and dessert cost 45 to 60 yuan or more. Back in Liuyun, Gu de Mao Ning (谷的猫宁猫咖领养馆) at 120 Tianhe South 1st Road is an adoption house with a bright room. Some pet shops in Liuyun sell kittens on monthly instalment plans, which a Chinese business magazine reported on in June 2025. Here are places to stay near Tianhe Sports Center on Booking.com.

On the 24th floor of the Hualong Building on Tianhe Road, Bukesiyi de Miao (不可思议的喵) offers kimono photos with the cats, a city view and unlimited time; it also sells cats. In Shawan, Yuanjian (远剑猫爪俱乐部) is run under the sports brand of the table-tennis player Lin Gaoyuan’s family and opened in April 2025.

Chongqing

Chongqing’s cat cafés are tucked into the city’s towers, often many floors up. Browse them all on our Chongqing map.

The first choice is Firefly Harbor (萤火虫港湾猫猫主题乐园), a rescue park on the Yangtze waterfront where hundreds of neutered, vaccinated former strays roam, with an adoption area. Entry is 19.9 yuan with a treat, booked through the park’s WeChat mini program, and it’s open from 10am to 6:30pm (5:30pm when it rains). Take Line 3 to exit 1 of Tongyuanju station, then a taxi. Young children, pets and your own cat food aren’t allowed.

In the Longhu Times Paradise Walk complex at Daping, on Lines 1 and 2, Miaoqu Hengsheng (喵趣哼声) is run by a mother and son who kept the cats of a pet shop that failed, and puts cats up for adoption; next to it, ZhaoHehao (赵和好) has dogs on one floor and cats and a Nintendo Switch on the other.

The Hongding International tower (红鼎国际) at Guanyinqiao is a Chongqing curiosity, with tiny cafés on different floors. Hello Xiaowo (Hello小窝) on the 19th floor of tower A is the one with the most recent reviews, and Kitten Cat Club, near exit 4 of Guanyinqiao station on Line 3, is the best known, though it’s a cattery that sells cats. In University Town, Chunshang Maoshu (椿上猫树) offers kimono dress-up with the cats for 35 to 38 yuan.
