The Cat Lounge Rescue and Adoption Center
La Jolla, California
The Cat Lounge Rescue and Adoption Center is a nonprofit cat lounge on Torrey Pines Road in La Jolla, a few minutes from La Jolla Village and La Jolla Cove. Opened in November 2019, it rescues cats from high-kill shelters across Southern California and works with other rescues and gives each cat full medical care. The cats roam freely in a living-room style lounge with a separate kitten nursery, and street-facing windows let passers-by watch them. Visitors walk in without an appointment and pay a per-person admission that allows them to stay as long as they like during opening hours, with no age limit, although children under 14 need a parent or guardian. Admission paid on the day can be credited toward a same-day adoption. The lounge can also be booked for private parties, and it runs a low-cost vaccine clinic and a free supply program for community cat feeders.

Champy's Catfé
Lincoln, California
Champy's Catfé is a cat adoption lounge inside FieldHaven Marketplace, the thrift and vintage store run by the nonprofit FieldHaven Feline Center on F Street in downtown Lincoln, Placer County. Visitors walk in during store hours and sit with adoptable FieldHaven cats in a relaxed, home-like room, help themselves to coffee or tea for a donation, and are welcome to stay and read, study or work on a laptop with free Wi-Fi. No booking is needed. Any of the cats can be adopted on site, with staff on hand to help match people with a cat. The room is named after Champy, FieldHaven's blind spokescat, who was rescued from a hoarding case in Lincoln in 2014 and now lives in retirement at the founder's home. All proceeds from the store support FieldHaven's rescue work, and the catfé can be booked for private events.

Cat Cafe Maui
Kahului, Hawaii
Cat Cafe Maui is a rescue cat lounge on the second floor of Queen Ka'ahumanu Center in Kahului, near Kahului Airport. Founded by Moriah Diamond, it opened in August 2022 as the first cat cafe on Maui and is run with the nonprofit Maui Cat Rescue in partnership with the Maui Humane Society. Visitors book a session of about 50 minutes in the cat lounge, which is entered through a separate door, and get complimentary coffee or tea and wifi. Walk-ins are accepted when space allows. Everyone signs a waiver, one adult must accompany every two children under 15, and clean socks are required, with cat-print pairs sold in the gift shop. All cats are adoptable, more than 1,000 have found homes, and the Fly Hawaii Cat program matches travelers with cats flying to adopters on the mainland. Events include cat yoga, kitty bingo, movie nights and sound baths.

Lāna'i Cat Sanctuary
Lanai City, Hawaii
Lāna'i Cat Sanctuary is a nonprofit open-air cat sanctuary on four acres near Lanai City, about five minutes from Lanai Airport. Founded in 2006 by Kathy Carroll with 25 cats and an old horse corral, it is now home to around 700 rescue cats, known as the Lanai Lions, and has saved more than 3,000 cats. It is not a cafe: visitors walk among the free-roaming cats inside a fenced enclosure about the size of half a football field. Entry is free, donations are welcome, no appointment is needed, and it is open every day. There is no food or drink for sale, so visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic. Every cat has a name, a microchip and a medical record, and the sanctuary also protects the island's ground-nesting seabirds. Many visitors arrive by ferry from Maui. Cats can be adopted or sponsored.

Toe Beans & Dreams Adoption Cafe
Aiea, Hawaii
Toe Beans & Dreams Adoption Cafe is a cat cafe in the Pearl Kai Shopping Center on Kamehameha Highway in Aiea, close to Pearl Harbor. It works with KAT Charities, a nonprofit rescue: the friendly cats and kittens trapped on Oahu's streets during weekly trap-neuter-return outings move into the cafe's kitty lounges once they are healthy and fixed. There are two lounges, one for playful kittens and one for calmer adult cats, with an upstairs area where the cats can retreat. Visits last 50 minutes and include cat treats, with a lower price for online bookings than for walk-ins, and children need adult supervision. The cafe serves build-your-own sandwiches, coffee and other drinks, and offers monthly memberships, birthday parties and a monthly kitten tea. It also provides jobs and training for young adults with developmental disabilities. All cats are adoptable, and more than 1,100 have been adopted.

Kona Kat Cafe
Kailua Kona, Hawaii
Kona Kat Cafe is the cat cafe of the Big Island, on Ali'i Drive in downtown Kailua-Kona, at street level beneath Pancho & Lefty's restaurant, across from the historic Kona Inn. Opened in November 2023 by Jenny and Carl Hulen, it combines a cat-themed gift shop, packaged snacks and drinks with the Catio, a separate lounge where around 12 to 20 rescue kittens and cats live while they wait for homes. Most come from CatSnip, a spay and neuter nonprofit in Kapa'au. Catio visits last an hour and are charged per person, with lower rates for seniors, children and kama'aina. Reservations are recommended and walk-ins depend on space. Visitors must be at least 7, children under 11 need an adult, and socks are required. More than 300 cats have been adopted, including by visitors who fly them home. Monthly events include cat yoga, painting and cat tai chi.

Itty Bitty Kitty Cafe
San Jose, California
Itty Bitty Kitty Cafe is the kitten lounge of Itty Bitty Orphan Kitty Rescue (IBOK), a volunteer-run nonprofit that saves orphaned kittens from high-kill shelters and raises them in foster homes. It sits at the back of Cambrian Park Plaza, a retro strip mall on Union Avenue in San Jose's Cambrian area, behind Pup Plaza. The cafe opens on weekends, when foster volunteers bring in kittens for a chance at adoption. Visits last 50 minutes in one of two kitten playrooms furnished like a family living room, with a volunteer in the room and small groups only. There is a per-person fee, guests must be at least five years old, and reservations are recommended, though walk-ins are taken when there is space. Shoes come off at the door, so visitors should bring socks. Coffee and cookies are set out nearby, and all the kittens are adoptable through IBOK.

Cat Chillin' Zone is a cat lounge and senior cat rescue on Center Avenue in downtown Martinez, describing itself as the first cat lounge in Contra Costa County. The woman-owned nonprofit takes in healthy older cats at risk of euthanasia in Bay Area shelters, along with cats that would otherwise need hospice care, and lets them live cage-free in a storefront adoption lounge. Visitors pay by the hour, with lower rates for seniors, military and children, and admission goes toward the rescue's adoption costs. Drop-ins are welcome, though scheduling a visit is preferred, and groups of more than six should call ahead. Children under 18 need a parent or guardian, and infants and toddlers are not admitted. Toys and teasers are provided. Adoption follows an application and a meet-and-greet with the chosen cat. The lounge also hosts trivia, karaoke and bunco nights.

The Radical Cat
Reno, Nevada
The Radical Cat is an independent feminist bookstore, cat adoption space and community venue on South Virginia Street in Reno's Midtown district. Working with the SPCA of Northern Nevada, it hosts adoptable cats in a glass-walled cat room in the shop, where visitors can sit with and pet the cats while browsing; usually only a few cats are in residence at a time. The shelves focus on new and used books on feminism, LGBTQ+ lives, anti-racism and social change, along with zines, art, gifts and a children's section, and the shop also houses Finetooth Records, which sells vinyl, CDs and cassettes. Coffee comes from Magpie Coffee Roasters next door. The space hosts a busy calendar of free events, including author readings, book clubs, writing groups, workshops, film nights and children's story times.

Humane Society of Charlotte Cat Cafe
Charlotte, North Carolina
The Humane Society of Charlotte runs a small cat cafe inside the retail center of its animal resource center on Parker Drive in west Charlotte, near Westover Hills. Each day one to three adoptable cats from the shelter spend time in the cafe room, where visitors can sit with them, work on the free Wi-Fi or simply stop by to see the cats. Entry is free; coffee and a range of sweet and salty snacks are sold at low prices. The same room is the shelter's retail shop, selling treats, toys and clothing for cats and dogs, and anyone who connects with a cat can start an adoption through the Humane Society. The wider center also handles dog and cat adoptions and runs a spay and neuter clinic. It is a much smaller and quieter setup than a dedicated cat cafe.

Nabi Cat Cafe
Santa Clara, California
Nabi Cat Cafe is a Korean-inspired cat cafe on The Alameda in Santa Clara, near Santa Clara University. Opened in 2025 by sisters-in-law Christine Hedeen and Ailee Kim, it has a walk-in cafe counter serving specialty lattes, Jeju matcha, fruit ades and pastries from local bakeries, and a separate two-level cat lounge with eight to twelve adoptable cats from the rescues Scritch Kittens and Kitten Rescue 101. Lounge passes last one hour and include a cafe drink, which may be taken inside; two-hour passes are sold on some weekdays. Reservations are strongly recommended because only eight guests are admitted per hour. Children five and older are welcome with one adult for every two children aged 12 and under, and guests wear shoe covers. Adoptions go through the partner rescue's application and interview. Wifi, workshops, memberships and private events are offered. Nabi is the Korean word for butterfly.

Cara's Cat Cafe
Destin, Florida
Cara's Cat Cafe is Destin's first cat cafe, a restaurant-style cafe with a separate cat lounge off Furling Lane, a short drive inland from the beaches. The cafe side serves coffee, matcha, brunch and lunch dishes such as paninis, salads, acai bowls and pizza, with vegan options, and needs no booking. A wall of windows looks into the lounge, which has its own air conditioning, so diners can watch the cats without going in. Lounge visits are charged per person per hour, with a shorter half-hour option, and are open to guests aged 10 and up only. Each guest needs an individual reservation made online, and walk-ins are taken when there is space. All the cats come from the local rescues 30A Cats and S.O.C.K.S. and can be adopted, with the full adoption fee going to the rescue.
