The Cat Retreat at Utanekodo
Kyoto
The Cat Retreat at Utanekodo is a reservation-only cat sanctuary in a townhouse about a hundred years old in Tachibanayanagicho, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, about 5 minutes on foot from Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Station. Set across quiet, tatami-style rooms, it pairs a small cafe area with a lounge where eight rescued cats roam freely at their own pace. The cats each have their own rescue story, from former stray kittens to cats saved from pet-industry conditions and animal welfare centers, and they are cared for with a focus on their comfort rather than adoption. Visits are booked online or by email, either as shared sessions of about 70 minutes for at least two guests or as more expensive private sessions for small groups, and prices are well above those of an ordinary cat cafe. Each visit centers on a matcha tea ceremony with a seasonal Japanese sweet, with soft drinks for those who prefer them. Guests are asked not to wear perfume and not to visit another animal cafe on the same day.
