Hogo Neko Undeux
Hogo Neko Undeux is a rescue and adoption cat cafe on the second floor of a building in Owatari-cho, Kamaishi, a few minutes on foot from JR Kamaishi Station. Run since 2019 by a private rescue group, it was the first adoption-type cat cafe on the Sanriku coast. The group takes in cats from the Kamaishi health centre and from hoarding cases along the coast, and it rehomes more than 50 cats a year, also joining adoption events held by the health centre. Visitors can drop in for a short 30-minute visit or, on weekdays, stay as long as they like for a flat fee, with lower prices for junior high school students and younger, who must come with a guardian. Annual supporter memberships give discounted or free entry. The cafe is closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and hours can change around events and rescue work.

Felis no Hakoniwa
Ichinoseki, Iwate35 mi / 57 km
Felis no Hakoniwa is a small adoption-type rescue cat cafe in Surisawa, in the Daito area of eastern Ichinoseki. Felis is Latin for cat. The rescue group behind it converted a former cafe restaurant, with help from a crowdfunding campaign, into a cat room with catwalks, and it opened in late 2022 as the first adoption cat cafe in southern Iwate. Adult cats and kittens rescued from the street and other difficult situations live here while they wait for new families, and the group also takes part in adoption events run by the Ichinoseki health centre. Food is no longer served. Visits are charged by time, and the fees help cover the cats' veterinary bills. The cafe opens in the afternoons but closes on irregular days, so checking the blog before visiting is advised.

Yonzudo-tei
Morioka, Iwate46 mi / 75 km
Yonzudo-tei is a small cafe in an old Japanese house in Kawamecho, on the eastern edge of Morioka, where eight rescued cats live. It feels like visiting a relative's home: the cats keep a relaxed distance rather than demanding play, and conversation with the owner about cats is part of the appeal. Visits are limited to one hour per person and paid in advance, and visitors order from a short menu of drinks and toast. Because the cats are wary of small children, only visitors of junior high school age and older are admitted. The house can be hard to find, and booking ahead is recommended. The cafe is closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and it also closes for events and some holidays, which are announced on Instagram. There is parking on site.
