Coal Cats Cafe
Tamaqua, Pennsylvania
Coal Cats Cafe is a cat cafe on West Broad Street in downtown Tamaqua, in Schuylkill County's coal region. Opened in October 2022 by Kim and Ron Chamberlain, it fosters cats and kittens for Starting Over Animal Rescue, and all of the cats in its Cat Den are available for adoption through the rescue. The decor celebrates the town's mining heritage, with a coal-cart cat tree, a mine-shaft mural and a corrugated metal ceiling, and the coffee menu follows the theme with drinks named after mining terms. Visitors book 45-minute sessions in the cat den, which is separate from the cafe counter, and walk-ins are welcome when there is space. Children must be at least nine years old to enter the cat den. A small gift shop sells local items, cat treats and cat-themed gifts.
