Kitty Queen, a no-kill nonprofit rescue, describes it as Pittsburgh's first cat lounge, and the current space replaced a smaller original lounge. Adoptable cats and kittens live together in an open, cage-free room with climbing structures, toys and soft resting spots, and visitors can come in simply to relax and play with them or to look for a cat to adopt. There is a small entry fee, walk-ins are welcome, and visits can also be reserved through the rescue's website. Visitors book half-hour sessions in a cat room designed for both people and cats, with benches that double as tunnels for cats that want to hide, and reservations are highly recommended, though a few walk-in spaces are kept. All the cats in the room can be adopted, and well over a hundred have found homes through the market. Drinks and cat-themed merchandise are sold at the front, and a fuller coffee shop is planned. The space hosts a steady programme of community events, including adults-only yoga with the cats, craft workshops and art shows, and it can be booked for parties. Students get a small weekday discount, and a frequent-visitor pass is available.
