Mellow Cafe
Wakayama
Mellow Cafe is a cat cafe on the second floor of a new building in Nakajima, in the south of Wakayama City, with free parking. Opened in January 2024 by a local construction company, it has a dining area and a separate cat room, so people with allergies can eat while watching the cats. Five friendly cats live here, including former rescues, an Exotic Shorthair and a long-legged Munchkin. The cat room is charged per 30 minutes or per hour, with a drink set available and extensions in 15-minute steps, and children of elementary school age and under must be with a guardian. Cats may not be picked up, socks are required, and visitors who have been to another animal cafe that day cannot enter. Lunch, such as keema curry and hamburg steak, is served until 2 PM, along with cat-themed parfaits.
Neco Republic Shiga
Aisho, Shiga
Neco Republic Shiga is the Shiga branch of Neco Republic, a national chain of rescue cat cafes that aims to end the culling of cats in Japan. It occupies the second floor above a Kumon classroom in Echigawa, Aisho, in the Koto area between Hikone and Higashiomi, and has its own parking. The cats, many of them kittens and young cats along with some shy adults, are all looking for homes, so every day works as an adoption event. Visitors can go into the cat rooms for a timed visit and buy treats for the cats, or stay in the spacious cafe area, which has manga and looks into the cat rooms through glass, and order drinks and light meals such as bagel plates and pound cake. The cafe closes on Mondays and Thursdays, opening on public holidays, and closes an hour earlier on Sundays and holidays.

Former rescue cats live in the house as shop cats, and further rescued cats wait for adoption, with some areas set aside for the cats only. Visitors can stroke and play with the calm, friendly cats while they eat, and staff often join in with toys. There is no cat charge; instead each guest orders at least one item, and part of the takings goes to rescue work. The menu includes Omi Fuji beef curry made with rice from the field outside, quiche, cat-face toast, parfaits and seasonal sweets. On busy days guests may be asked to give up their table after about 90 minutes. The cafe opens Friday to Sunday and on public holidays.

Neko Minka Hidamari no Ie
Wakayama
Neko Minka Hidamari no Ie is an adoption-focused rescue cat cafe in an old Japanese house in Yamaguchinishi, in the rural east of Wakayama City near the border with Iwade. It is run single-handedly by a volunteer who takes in kittens from the animal welfare centre and rescues local street cats, and the cafe's income pays for their food and vet bills. The house has been renovated for the cats, who roam freely in a spacious room, and a cafe space is separated from the cat area by an acrylic screen, so visitors with allergies can still watch the cats. Visitors can spend unhurried time with the friendly rescue cats, and the cafe also sells second-hand goods flea-market style. All the cats are looking for permanent homes, and the owner also welcomes volunteers. The cafe closes on Fridays.

No food or drinks are served, so guests may bring a drink in a container with a secure lid. Adoption applications are screened carefully. Wafu Oke Neko Kissa
Kashihara, Nara
Wafu Oke Neko Kissa, known as Okeneko, is a rescue and adoption cat cafe in Yagicho, Kashihara, about two minutes on foot from Yagi-Nishiguchi Station and a short walk from Yamato-Yagi Station. Opened in 2014, it is named after the wooden tubs (oke) the cats nap in. The cafe is the base of a rescue operation that has taken in more than 700 cats from the prefectural animal centre, other groups and the public and found homes for over 650 of them, so the cats on site are a changing group of friendly lap cats waiting for adoption after medical care. Visits are charged by time and no booking is needed, but calling ahead to check how busy it is is recommended. Drinks are no longer served, and socks must be worn (no tights).
