Gatos ⁠‌‌​​‌​‌​‌​‌​​‌‌‌​‌​​​​‌‌​‌​​‌​​‌​‌‌‌‌‌‌‌⁠& Beans is a cat cafe in the East Avondale neighborhood of Birmingham, on 3rd Court South a few blocks from Avondale Park and the 41st Street bars and restaurants. Opened in 2019 in a converted tire shop, it was the first cat cafe in Alabama. A coffee counter at the front serves espresso drinks with cat-breed names, tea, hot chocolate and soft drinks, and a separate cat room holds adoptable rescue cats from Kitty Kat Haven & Rescue, a cage-free rescue in Hoover. Visits to the cat room last an hour and include a drip coffee, tea, soft drink or water. The room takes about 12 people per hour, so booking online is recommended, especially at weekends; walk-ins are seated when there is space. The cafe also sells handmade cat jewelry and gifts and hosts private bookings such as birthday parties.

Huntsville, Alabama

Cattyshack ⁠‌‌​​‌​‌​‌‌​​​​​​​‌‌‌​​​​​​‌‌​​​​​​‌​‌​​‌⁠is a nonprofit cat rescue with a cat lounge in Studio 1062 of Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment, the converted cotton mill full of artist studios and galleries in west Huntsville. The rescue, founded in 2019, keeps its cats in foster homes and brings a rotating group of adoptable cats and kittens into the home-style lounge on Fridays and Saturdays, so visitors can play with them or simply relax in their company without any plan to adopt. Reservations are required and are made online with a set donation per person. Adoptions start with a non-binding application and are processed by volunteers, so cats are not taken home on the same day. The lounge is reached through Door 2 of Lowe Mill, with an accessible entrance at Door 4, and a visit is easy to combine with a walk through the studios.
