It is run by Happy Paws, a rescue association founded in 2018 that takes cats off the streets, treats and neuters them and looks for new homes; cats in its care stay at the cafe while they wait for adopters. The front room is a regular cafe for guests who prefer not to sit with cats, while the cats live in a separate room at the back where visitors can also have their drinks. Cafe Neko is a cat cafe in Vienna's Innere Stadt, on the corner of Blumenstockgasse and Ballgasse, a short walk from St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Stephansplatz U1 and U3 station. Opened in 2012 on the model of Japanese cat cafes, it was Austria's first. The cafe is now under new management, and a new group of resident cats moved in around the end of 2025. They roam the room among climbing walls, beds and toys and have retreat areas that guests cannot enter. Das House is a cat cafe and cocktail bar on Gumpendorfer Straße in Vienna's 6th district, Mariahilf, within walking distance of the U3 Neubaugasse and U4 Kettenbrückengasse stations and the Naschmarkt. Malmacska is a cat cafe in the Kárpáti mill, a former water mill on Erdei Malom köz at the edge of the Sopron Hills, popular with cyclists and hikers. Opened in September 2022 as Sopron's first cat cafe, it began with five purebred and mixed-breed cats and has since added a room as the mill is renovated. There is no entry fee; visitors order specialty coffee, lemonades, cakes, pastries, sandwiches and savoury pies, and board games are available. Guests sanitise their hands on arrival and must not feed the cats, which are on special diets. There is no age limit, but parents are asked to supervise young children closely.
