Café Katzenwald
Café Katzenwald is a vegetarian cat cafe in Wolfenbüttel's old town, on Löwenstraße at the start of the pedestrian zone when coming from the Schlossplatz. Opened in May 2025 as the first cat cafe in the Braunschweig region, it is decorated as a forest with warm wood, plants and a large tree on one wall. Its cats come from the Tierheim Helmstedt animal shelter, with a focus on older cats or cats with disabilities that have poorer chances of adoption, and they can be adopted when a suitable home is found. The group is kept at four to six cats, which have a separate room closed to guests where they can retreat and spend the night. The vegetarian menu includes breakfast, bagels, waffles, cakes and hot dishes with vegan options, plus coffee and matcha, and cat treats are sold. There is outdoor seating.

Café Katzenzeit is an independent cat cafe in Braunschweig's historic Magniviertel, on Am Magnitor near the Magnikirche. It opened in January 2026 in the former premises of the owner's matcha pop-up store. About six cats from various animal shelters and rescue groups live in the roughly 200-square-metre cafe and roam freely among the guests, with two and a half rooms to retreat to. The cafe's own cats are not for adoption, but the owner uses the cafe to promote adopting shelter cats from across Lower Saxony and to give advice on it. House rules ask guests not to pick up, chase or wake the cats, and treats can be bought for them. The menu offers breakfast, brunch, sandwiches, waffles, cakes, Italian coffee and matcha drinks. Opening hours have changed several times, so checking the cafe's Instagram before a visit is advisable.
