Hogoneko Fureai Cafe Mofumaru
Kushiro, Hokkaido2.5 mi / 4.1 km
Mofumaru is a rescue cat cafe in Kotobuki, Kushiro, that opened on 7 March 2025 as the city's first permanent rescue cat cafe, after a crowdfunding campaign. Despite the name, it serves no food or drinks: visits are simply time spent with the cats. Many of the cats were meant to be neutered and returned to their neighbourhoods but could not go back, and many are adult cats. Finding homes for them is the main aim, and the cafe also presents itself as a place to learn about cats. No reservation is needed, and entry is charged per 30 minutes. The cafe is closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays and over the New Year, and may close at short notice if the cats are unwell. It also takes part in local events such as the Kushiro Neko Darake market.

Its cats are rescues looking for adopters, including adults with disabilities and mother-and-kitten pairs, and several have already gone to new homes or trial placements. Visits are booked in advance by phone, with no more than five visitors at a time; no drinks are served and extensions are not offered. Visitors must wear socks and masks. On the 22nd of each month small groups can visit for 30 minutes free of charge. The operators are converting the upper floor into a lodging where guests, including older people who cannot keep pets, can stay with the rescue cats, a project funded partly by crowdfunding.
