Java Whiskers is a cat café with adoptions on Surbrunnsgatan in Vasastan, Stockholm, a short walk from Odenplan and Sankt Eriksplan. It opened in February 2019 in the former premises of Konditori Valand and is known as Sweden's first cat café. Around nine rescued cats from shelters and rehoming organisations live in a lounge with hideaways and a private retreat room, and all of them are available for adoption; more than a thousand cats have found homes through the café. Visits to the cat lounge are booked online in 55-minute slots, with drop-in places when there is space, and prices vary by time of day. Children from six years old are welcome with an adult. Guests take off their shoes and may not lift or chase the cats. The cashless café serves specialty coffee, grilled sandwiches and pastries, and hosts cat yoga, painting evenings and private bookings.
