The Cat's Familiar

The Cat's Familiar is a cat cafe and gift shop on Water Street in downtown Gardiner, along the Kennebec River south of Augusta. Opened in November 2025 by owner Bonnie Caspersen, it serves affordable home-style take-out such as sandwiches, ice cream and smoothies, and sells gifts made by local artisans. The cat lounge is a cozy space with adoptable cats and kittens, and visitors can book a visit of up to one hour online, with walk-ins welcome when there is room. Admission is charged per person, with lower rates for seniors and teenagers, and children 12 and under enter free with a paying adult. The fees support the cafe's rescue work, and if a visitor adopts a cat the same day, the visit cost is applied toward the adoption fee.
