River Kitty Cat Café is a delightful nonprofit venture operated by the Vanderburgh Humane Society (VHS) since November 2019, when it was acquired from its original founders, Annette Gries and Nancy Drake. Opened in July 2017, this café combines the charm of a coffee shop—offering a variety of drinks like coffee, smoothies, teas, beer, and wine, alongside treats such as macarons and baked goods—with a lounge housing about 20 adoptable cats from VHS. For a $10 fee per hour (or $8 for 30 minutes, walk-in only), visitors can relax with these kitties, all of whom are available for adoption through a remote process handled by VHS counselors, helping to free up shelter space and save more lives. Every dollar spent supports the care of homeless animals in the community, making this café not just a cozy spot to unwind but a vital part of local animal rescue efforts.
